Dad or dad?

My dad…Dad…

My mom

Mom…

Capitalize names of relationships only when they are a part of or a substitute for a person’s name. (Often this means that when there is a modifier, such as a possessive pronoun, in front of such a word, we do not capitalize it.)

“Let’s go visit Grandmother today.”

“Let’s go visit my grandmother today.”

  1. Oh I love this. I always go back and check for this one. I think people miss this a lot. Also something I thought interesting is overuse of the word” that”. People say, I told him that….but good writers drop “that” and simply state what they said. (ie., I told him not use that word that.) 😀 I use an older English style of writing professionally.
I was going to ask you if you ever use the word “stet” when proofing. I use that when I’ve marked something for correction and change my mind and want it printed as originally written.

BTW, you inspired me with your nightmares post. I didn’t mention your name but referred to you. I wasn’t sure that was okay. https://tellmeaboutit.co/2017/01/12/in-the-city-where-no-one-slept/

      1. AWE thank you. I feel strongly to support those that really try and have the desire to follow their dreams. It’s a beautiful thing when you dreams come true. I’ve been fortunate enough to see 2 of my dreams come true and if today was my last day on earth I would say I’ve lived a good life and all is well! I hope that for you too! 🙂

  2. Grandma’s name was always in caps. But, then, for years I had no idea she had a different name than ‘Grandma Eng.’ I’d even address her mail to that name. It got there!!!

  3. Interesting tidbit. Reminds me of my great grandma referred to as “Nana.” I am not sure I knew her first name other than “Nana.”Sounds like a good story to write. She was an interesting character.
